Snowdon Sea to Summit Challenge
NEW DATES ADDED FOR OPEN CHALLENGES: Sunday 13th April 2025 Saturday 17th May 2025 These events are now guaranteed to run! Our Sea to Summit walking challenge is 45km in length with over 1600 metres of ascent on a mixture of footpaths, minor lanes and mountain paths. We start at 8am at Black Rock Sands, close to Porthmadog, which has good public transport links. We then aim to finish at Pen-y-Pass within 12 hours where it’s possible to return to Porthmadog by bus or taxi. Depending on the needs of the group, we can help arrange connecting transport. There will also be a support vehicle stationed on the route to provide refreshments and kit changes. The Afon Glaslyn is one of Snowdonia's mighty rivers, it is steeped in local history and legends. From its source, the high mountain lake of Glaslyn, directly underneath the summit cliffs of Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon, the Afon Glaslyn cascades down through a series of gorges, lakes and valleys before reaching the flood plains of Porthmadog and the Irish Sea. The concept is simple: start at the mouth of the river and follow it, as close as it is practical, to the summit of Snowdon. We start at the iconic beach of Black Rock Sands close to Porthmadog, from here the Wales Coast path is followed along the estuary into the town itself. We then walk along a series of footpaths through the reclaimed valley known as Traeth Mawr, the rivers original estuary, to the village of Nantmor and along the epic Aberglaslyn Gorge. After passing the village of Beddgelert we walk through the valley of Nant Gwynant to Snowdon's Watkin path with it's waterfalls and crystal-clear pools, we then leave the main path to climb one of Snowdon's finest routes: The South Ridge. This wild and rugged path is never too difficult for experienced mountain walkers but it is quiet and immensely satisfying, the summit is visible ahead and after a final push we make it to our goal - the summit of Snowdon at 1085 metres above sea level. The day is not yet over, we make a quick descent of the Miner's Track past the lakes of Glaslyn & Llyn Llydaw before the challenge is finally over at Pen-y-Pass. Private group bookings: Please get in touch via the contact page for availability and quotes. Individual bookings: Spaces are £95 per person, we are able to run an open event with a minimum of 4 participants so please get in contact to register your interest.
